Gavranović is rare enough that nearly everyone who carries it traces back to the same corner of the world. These are well-known bearers of the name and a look at where it lives today. They are namesakes, not documented relatives, but the pattern of their origins tells us something about our own.
A Swiss former professional footballer and forward, born in Lugano in 1989 to Bosnian Croat parents whose family came from Gradačac, in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. He built a career across two countries’ top leagues, Schalke 04 in Germany, then FC Zürich, HNK Rijeka, and Dinamo Zagreb, and played for the Swiss national team at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.
His story matters here for one reason: he is a famous, living example of the Gavranović name as a Bosnian Croat name. His family’s roots lie in a different part of Bosnia than ours, Gradačac, not Prijedor, so there is no known relationship between his line and Ivan’s. But it is the same naming pool, and it lends weight to the reading of our own family as Bosnian Croats.
A Croatian grocery chain founded in 1991 in Ogulin and grown by the Gavranović family into a network of roughly 170 stores, today part of the NTL retail alliance, with its head office in Zagreb. Proof the name is a thriving going concern in its Croatian heartland.
